What is Intarsia?
INTARSIA: A mosaic worked in wood. The art or process of
making such mosaics. Developed in 15th Century Italy. Readers Digest Dictionary.
Intarsia was
undoubtably the precursor of marquetry; it fell, however into decline as the ability to produce thin
ly cut veneers needed for marquetry was developed. Early intarsia was a mosaic of equally thick pieces,
whereas the intarsia work of today has developed into a modern sculptered artform relieved in three dimensions
mainly due to the efforts of Judy Gale Roberts in America.
